WOODBRIDGE, VA — After a four-week mail-ballot union election, Prince William County employees have made it official; we’ve joined SEIU Virginia 512, with 89 percent of voters in favor.

With this historic decision, we look forward to building a powerful, dynamic, and member-led union that will bring prosperity for our families and communities. We are also excited to join our public sector colleagues in Loudoun, Richmond, and Fairfax as the union difference reaches more workers in Virginia and beyond.

Change doesn’t come easy, and this successful election represents the culmination of four years of hard work, overcoming structural challenges that would make many workers lose faith. However, Prince William County employees didn’t back down – we were determined to stick together to win our union as another step in our quest to secure a strong contract, which will lock in the higher wages, good benefits, and a true workplace voice that we want.

Change has truly come to Prince William County today,” said Patrice Summers, who has worked for Prince William County for over 20 years. “The workers who keep this county running deserve to have a voice in the decision process that affects their work. Even in the face of challenges, we never gave up. That makes me excited about what we are building here.”

“Many Prince William County workers cannot afford to live in the County in which they work,” said Melinda Vaikasiene, who is an employee in Prince William County’s Department of Community Services. “Winning our union and a collective bargaining agreement that locks in guaranteed wages and benefits will allow workers to build stable lives in the communities we serve.”

“Congratulations to the hard-working Prince William County employees. Once again, when workers have the opportunity to vote for their union, they do. It’s the path to a better life, generational wealth, and healthy workplaces,” said LaNoral Thomas, President of SEIU Virginia 512. “All Virginians deserve the right to collectively bargain, and we will not stop fighting until that becomes a reality. We welcome all political leaders and community members in the Commonwealth to support workers' rights to form a union.”

Prince William County employees will begin contract negotiations with the Prince William County Board of Supervisors in the coming weeks. By collaborating with county leadership on this agreement, we will ensure that this is the best place to live and work in Virginia and set a foundation for future success.
